The Voices of Wellington

Year 12 Committee

As part of our commitment to our whole school community, we felt that it was important for students to come together outside of the rigours of our Curriculum and Extra-Curricular programmes to celebrate a range of events organised and lead by students for students.  We felt that the bringing together of whole school or cross-phase events and competitions, would provide further enrichment opportunities that supplement the existing varied learning experiences for our students.  Our aim is to provide a viable base of activities to allow in the future, annual calendared events, which attract greater student interaction across each phase in the school.

We decided to launch the Islamic Calligraphy competition as our inaugural event.  Its’ success will, hopefully ensure that this will become an annual competition to promote further understanding and collaboration during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan Islamic Calligraphy

Right at the start of Ramadan 2025 and as part of their WSQ Community events programme, The Voices of Wellington Committee issued an invitation to all budding writers and artists to participate in a Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 House Competition for students to create a piece of Islamic Calligraphy. The competition was open to all interested students in years 4 to 8.

The aim of the competition was to encourage students of every faith, to produce a piece of artwork that was a word or phrase that represented what the month of Ramadan signified to them as an individual.  The main design had to be in Islamic Calligraphy but had also to include an English translation somewhere on the piece.   The challenge could be undertaken as an individual or as a team with one other person.  The competition was also not to be done during curriculum time, rather as an additional project for the students to demonstrate their connection to the WSQ community.

There were dozens of entries, particularly from Year 6 and the standard was exceptionally high.  Our ‘A’ Level Arabic students checked the translations and the actual calligraphy, in addition to having the tough role of judging the top 6 entries.  These have been framed and are now displayed in the our school.

The students who produced the best calligraphy were presented with a certificate and House Points.
